DON’T DROP IT! is our umbrella theme for preventative campaigns.  We believe that solving the litter problem is a huge task and one that demands a multi faceted approach.

Public Awareness

The campaign is spearheaded by our public awareness campaign. Our strategy is to

  • change social attitudes and littering behaviour
  • establish littering as socially unacceptable

In addition to cleaning up, a key objective of our Spring Cleans and River & Canal Days is to raise the profile of the litter problem.

DON’T DROP IT!  posters have already been displayed in the Oxford Bus Company’s fleet of city buses, a number of bus shelters across the city and community notice boards. We are currently recruiting supporters of our campaign to extend the coverage of the poster and roundels to local shops, takeaway restaurants and cafes, schools, colleges and offices.

Targeting Sources, Causes and Places

We also campaign to reduce the amount of litter which blights our city by focussing on other specific underlying sources, causes and places which are at the root of the problem. Amongst our activities are:

  • ensuring an improved quantity , design size  and management of litter bins
  • tackling the problems caused by ‘eating and drinking on the go’
  • clearing the pavements of cigarette butts
  • removing flytip and ensuring that future tipping is minimised
  • getting the Ring Road cleaned up and staying clean
  • encouraging people to support Keep Britain Tidy’s Car Litter Campaign

As part of these activities, we ensure that the litter problem has a high profile with people with influence in the city.  We have ongoing dialogues and work with people who can help to ensure the city is cleaned up and prevent it getting littered – councillors, city officers, business leaders, City Centre Management.

Schools’ Anti-Litter Campaign

The objective of our Anti-Litter Schools Campaign is three-fold:

  • establish and maintain litter-free environments in Oxford’s schools
  • raise awareness of the many benefits of a litter-free environment
  • involve young people in the process so that they understand the problems and how to solve them

Language Schools

We are also encouraging Language Schools to adopt a Voluntary Code of Practice which is aimed at improving litter awareness amongst students and keeping premises and neighbouring areas litter free.
