Aims and ambitions
City Wide
- prompt collection/clean up of dropped litter by council operatives
- litterbins fit for purpose – windproof, larger or more, better quality for easy maintenance, recycling capability where possible
- regular litter bin emptying to avoid overflowing
- litterbins better maintained - cleaned more often
- system for reporting and clearing grot spots caused by flytipping and other accumulation
- eliminating windblown rubbish from domestic collections
City Centre (and other high footfall areas)
- no chewing gum on pavements
- no cigarette butts outside buildings
- trade waste promptly collected
- street traders and fast food outlets to create less litter, to use biodegradable boxes etc
Ring Road (and other busy roads)
- litter bins and notices in lay-bys
- regular, published programme of litter clearance on main roads
- co-ordination of grass cutting and litter clearance on roadside
Recent Developments
- better general maintenance by city authorities eg crack down on trade waste practices, better litter picking etc
- city centre manager
- City Council awareness and enforcement campaigns: Cleaner Greener Oxford, first in the centre, then Blackbird Leys, then Cowley Road area
- extra bins in Cornmarket
- new bins across city centre and in Summertown, some with recycling facility
- tighter licence conditions for street traders eg branding packaging (but no obvious effect yet)
- ring road - bins and notices in some lay-bys but still a problem
- new 'hot wash' machine to clean gum off pavements
Under Development
- new bins coming to city centre soon
- Cleaner Greener Oxford moving to rest of East Oxford, to coincide with university terms starting, then maybe Summertown?
- continuing enforcement of cigarette litter in centre but legal hitch re tackling businesses
- new system this autumn for collecting recyclable to replace blue/green boxes
- Brookes University to appoint students to act as liaison officers with local community (trial period first in DRARA area)
- extension of definition of HMOs, licensing may cover antisocial behaviour and rubbish (consultation in progress?)
