Saturday 17 April 2010 |
co-ordinated by the River Users Group Oxford
Co-ordinated by the River Users Group, Oxford’s boaters took to the water to clear up the rubbish and litter that blights the Thames and its tributaries in Oxford. This clear up followed a successful inaugural event in Autumn 2009.
 |
The River Thames Society, Osney Marina Club, Osney Boat Club, City Barge Club, Thames Traditional Boat Club, Oxford Academical Rowing Club, British Canoe Union, Oxford River Cruises and Falcon Rowing and Canoe Club all took part in the event. |

More than 30 bags of rubbish and sundry items (e.g. two umbrellas, a bicycle and a drain rod) were collected. Although this is a large amount, it was less than was collected six months ago – which suggests that significant inroads had been made during Autumn 2009 clear up. |

Rubbish in the water not only spoils the beauty of our waterways and the pleasure of boaters, walkers and cyclists – but also contributes to flooding as it blocks the outlets for water to drain away from rivers. |

The Environment Agency patrolled the
main river and collected rubbish on the day.
Oxford City Council supplied sacks and boxes
and removed the haul at the end of event. |
