Thank you very much to all of you that took part.  The city is visibly cleaner and tidier after a Spring Clean – and, importantly, we have raised awareness with the general public that a cleaner and tidier city is a better place to be! We will continue to work hard to keep our beautiful city cleaner and tidier all year round with our Don’t Drop It! Campaign.  We also thank our partners – Oxford City Works and The Oxford Times – and sponsors whose contribution to the success of this event is invaluable

We are delighted with the continued show of support by such large numbers of groups from across the city during our third annual Spring Clean event held on 5 & 6 March.  One hundred groups (fielding more than fifteen hundred volunteers) turned out – even more than previous events.

residents’ associations,  primary schools,  cyclists,  community action groups,  secondary schools

nurseries, rowers/canoeists,

friends of local parks,

community associations, parish councils, neighbourhood watch,

restaurants, colleges, political groups, theatres

An impressive cross-section of the city’s communities – location within the city, interest and age group– were represented.  Each group carried out a two hour litter pick at a place of their choice. For a full list of groups which took part, visit Participating Groups.

children’s nurseries, scouts, environment groups, sports  clubs, businesses, student volunteers, street wardens

preservation societies,  children’s centers,

rotary clubs

boaters,  allotment associations, student unions, self-grown neighbourhood groups, places of worship

Whilst many groups cleaned up streets, parks and other locations within their ‘patch’, some tackled some of the city’s worst grot spots eg ring road and Oxpens Lorry and car park. Others decided to clean up some of the city’s beauty spots eg Thames and Canal towpath

Free Litter Pickers donated to  Community Groups

OxClean’s key priority in 2010 was to help local communities to make a difference within their ‘patch’ and other public places throughout the year.
To this end, we sought funds to buy litter pickers to donate permanently to community groups taking part in Spring Clean 2010 – so that they had them to hand for Spring Cleans and other times during the year.

Thanks to a wonderful grant from Grassroots Grants through The Oxfordshire Community Foundation, generous support from Oxford Civic Society, Carl Room, Franchisee of McDonald’s Restaurants in Oxford and The Helping Hand Company, we were able to purchase over 400 litter pickers.  Of these, we gave up to 5 litter pickers to 60 community groups – a total of 300 litter pickers.  The remaining litter pickers are retained by OxClean for loaning as required.

The Headmaster and students of The Oxford Academy hosted this year’s Official Launch. Speakers were John Goddard, Deputy Lord Mayor of Oxford, Andrew Smith, Member of Parliament for Oxford East, Tim Stevenson OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and The Chairman of Oxford Civic Society, Tony Joyce.  We value their support and encouragement a great deal.

Achievement

Considerable inroads were made into the litter and rubbish lying and blowing around our city.  Huge quantities of litter and scrap was collected.  Oxford City Works did a wonderful job delivering and collecting piles and piles of filled litter sacks and scrap.
