Why?
The quantity of litter on our streets and in our parks has more than doubled over the past ten years. Plastic bottles, crisp packets and other food packaging are blighting many parts of the city. From a practical point of view, we want to clean up as much of this litter as possible. Importantly, we also want to draw attention to the problem and its causes, start changing people’s behaviour and improve the provision of disposal units.

What?
Local groups and organisations who volunteer to take part in Spring Clean 2008 nominate a site – eg local park, playground, public open spaces – and arrange a two hour litter pick there at a time of their choice during the Spring Clean 2008 weekend.

Who?
We are inviting a wide variety of local groups and organisations to take part – businesses, church groups, colleges and schools, interest groups, residents’ associations, restaurants and pubs, retailers, take away outlets, youth groups.

Oxford Civic Society is co-ordinating the project and will ensure that participating groups and organisations have access to detailed information about choice of equipment, health and safety guidelines, tips on how to run the day, regular updates and relevant publicity material.

Oxford City Council will be sharing their expertise on all aspects of litter collection, supplying and distributing plastic bags and other equipment and collecting litter bags from the roadside throughout the city at the end of each day.
